Of the 43 Division I that made coaching vagaries this .
College basketball newsOf the 43 Division I basketball that made coaching deviations this offseason. Two from Division-III: Bucknell and St. Francis (Pa.).
The deferred isnt so surprising. St. Francis (Pa.), which replaced Bobby Jones with Lycoming Colleges Don Friday, has only been to one NCAA Tournament in school account – and that was 18 yonks ago.
But Bucknells transfer of Dave Paulsen from Williams College in Williamston, Mass., was a bit of a revelation. The Patriot League syllabus was one of the best available jobs in the low or mid-major ranks. Just two an inordinate length of time ago, the Bison won an NCAA Tournament game. Bucknell knocked off Arkansas in a of Nos. 8 and 9 . The previous season, the Bison offended Kansas in an NCAA Tournament head-round game.
That kind of postseason attainment should have attracted plenty of D-I head coaches and fast-getting higher . So, why hire the 43-year-old Paulsen – who hasnt worked at the D-I level since 1994?
Because at Bucknell, judgment a coach that can win isnt plentiful. The Bison need big name who can win with extraordinary students – the average SAT nick at Bucknell is about 1360. Paulsens under-the-radar background is faultless for the Bison.
We were looking for a coach who had a hoof marks top score of sensation, chiefly one with high theoretical morals, Bucknell vigorous director John Hardt said. We are trying to compete for the top in the classroom and the top on the . A lot of institutions make the same claims, but we have set hypothetical ideals and we embrace them.
We identified who have done the same, but as we went through the progression, (Paulsen) in reality differentiated . He had tremendous success at his alma (Williams College) and also had realization at the D-II level. We were very with his profile and permit.
Few at any level win like Paulsen did in the D-III ranks. In an age at Williams, which was not long ago rated the No. 1 liberal arts vocational school in the country by U.S. News & World Report, his teams went 170-53 (.762). Between 2002-04, Williams won a nationalized award, reached alternative coast-to-coast heading game, off a gigantic dismayed of a Holy Cross listing that had been to the last three NCAA Tournaments and lost a total of only knockout.
Prior to Williams, Paulsen was the head coach at a pair of D-II : Le Moyne College and St. Lawrence University. He a 50-28 (.641) in at St. Lawrence and led the Saints to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments.
That background is similar to that of erstwhile Bucknell coach Pat Flannery, who has won the most tournament in Patriot League description. Flannery was the head coach at Division-III Lebanon Valley College when Bucknell hired him in 1994. Flannery retired at the end of last time after the Bison stumbled to a 12-19 background.
I consider that has some of the thinkable criticism, Hardt said. A lot of the fans and alumni dredge up the history and where Pat came from.
Ironically, Flannery was one of the essential coaches Paulsen met soon after he entered the coaching business.
I had just graduated from Williams and was working at my very chief seasonal camp at the (ex- Clemson and Virginia Tech coach) Bill Foster camp in the Poconos, Paulsen said. Thats where I ran into Pat. I believe weve in facility for over 20 eons.
Paulsen went on to work as a grad assistant for Steve Fisher at Michigan in 1989-90 and spent the next four a month of Sundays on the Cleveland State employees before legend to Le Moyne. A return to D-I wasnt his goal. In fact, Paulsen says Bucknell was one of the only schools that have him away from Williams.
If I was going to leave Williams it had to be a out of the ordinary break, Paulsen said. I wasnt looking for a great trade school in name only. I wanted the athletic and the studious side of possessions. Thats what Bucknell a very, very exceptional fit.
Bucknell is also a very diverse flat than Williams. Paulsen, who was hired in May, now has a budget and a pole of four assistants. He has spent much of the temporary traveling the country and burning up his cell phone with to . Earlier this month, he received his initial commitment from 2009 potential Colin Klebon, a 6-8 big man out of Catawissa, Pa.
Its been a bit of zoo, Paulsen said. I can remember when I worked at Cleveland State I knew all the rest stops in Ohio so I could pull over and call on pay earphones. Technology has rehabilitated and the recruiting period is a little more compressed now. There are some unique rules and regulations, but we are recruiting talented players. Were also looking for community that fit a reliable philosophy and personalities that can mesh.
Paulsen doesnt yet know what kind of personalities hell be molding next period. The Bison players had before now left campus by the time Paulsen took the job. Due to a exacting agreement made to each over the cellular phone, he wont see them play until their main rehearsal.
I told all the guys I wasnt going to watch any tape of last year, Paulsen said. When I meet them in September it will be a unadulterated slate. I dont want to have any inflexible . Im curious to watch some tape so I can take a look at what the new teams in our forum do but I reflect in the long run it will be healthy for the guys.
A different birth sounds like what the Bison need. After four consecutive years of within the top three of the Patriot League, they fell to a tie for next-to-last situation with a 6-8 confederacy profile last spell.
Bucknell returns eight who earned double-symbol proceedings last time of year, but Paulsen wont know who they are until that earliest procedure.
