Ball State wide receiver Dante Love can move his arms.
College football newsBall State wide receiver Dante Love can move his arms. And legs after undergoing a five-hour surgical procedure to stabilize a fractured back, the school announced Sunday.
Love needed the operation to stabilize a cervical spine fracture and a spinal cord injury, Ball State team physician Dr. Jay Matchett said in a statement.
We were told the surgery went well, Ball State coach Brady Hoke said. Sunday morning, Dante was alert and extremely tired. His attitude and spirits are good, and we are praying for him right now.
Love underwent the operation at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. The hospital said that Love had been admitted to the critical care unit, although no medical update was provided.
Love was hospitalized late Saturday night after suffering the injury during the Cardinals 42-20 upset of Indiana. He sustained the injury with 10:45 remaining in the first half when he collided helmet-to-helmet with Indianas Chris Adkins, who jarred the ball loose to set up a touchdown return for the Hoosiers.
Love remained motionless on the field for several minutes before being placed on a stretcher and immobilized. The senior was carted off the field at Memorial Stadium and taken to Bloomington Hospital before being transferred to Methodist Hospital.
Ball State released a statement after the game saying that Love experienced numbness and tingling while he was on the field.
The injury to Love marred an otherwise ground-breaking night for Ball State, which recorded the first win in school history against a team from a BCS conference. Hoke cut short his postgame news conference in order to visit Davis at the hospital.
Im going to be real brief because I want to go see how Dante Love is doing, Hoke said after the game. It was obviously a tremendous win. I appreciate your understanding, but Im going to go to the hospital.
The 5-10 Love entered the weekend averaging 144.3 receiving yards per game, the best mark in the nation. The Cincinnati native leads the Cardinals (4-0) with 25 receptions for 433 yards.
