(1) NORTH CAROLINA 97, RUTGERS 75

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina Tyler Hansbrough had 26 points and 10 rebounds and Ty Lawson added 19 points as top-ranked North Carolina led from start to finish en route to a 97-75 victory over Rutgers.

Danny Green scored 18 points for the Tar Heels (12-0), who have won each of their games by double digits this season.

Both teams shot well from the field. But the Scarlet Knights, who like to play an up-tempo game similar to the Tar Heels, were hurt by 19 turnovers.

North Carolina came out firing, making 13-of-15 shots in the opening nine minutes to take a 29-21 lead with 11:01 left in the first half. Hansbrough made his first five shots to open the game.

The Scarlet Knights hung in with some hot shooting of their own, but Lawson scored the final five points of a 9-0 run that gave the Tar Heels a 44-30 lead with 4:38 left in the first half.

North Carolina extended its lead to as many as 18 before settling for a 52-38 advantage at the break.

The Tar Heels continued to keep the Scarlet Knights at bay in the second half and Hansbroughs dunk made the score, 65-46, with 14:48 left in the game.

Rutgers did its best to keep the score respectable as Corey Chandlers 3-pointer cut the deficit to 80-67 with 5:34 remaining.

However, North Carolina had too much down the stretch and came up three points shy of its fifth 100-point game of the season.

It is the second straight season that North Carolina has opened with at least 12 wins. The Tar Heels won their first 18 games to open last season.

Freshman Mike Rosario scored 26 points to lead the Scarlet Knights (9-4), who had their four-game winning streak snapped.

(10) UCLA 78, LOUISIANA TECH 55

LOS ANGELES Josh Shipp scored 16 points and No. 10 UCLA used some dominant defense to cruise to a 78-55 victory over Louisiana Tech.

Alfred Aboya and freshman Jrue Holiday chipped in 12 points apiece while Darren Collison dished out 13 assists for the Bruins, who have won six games in a row.

It was the final tune-up for UCLA (10-2) before Pac-10 play begins. The Bruins open their conference slate against Oregon State on Friday.

UCLA used stifling defense from the start against the Bulldogs, holding them to 24 percent (7-of-29) shooting in the first half en route to taking a 37-17 lead into the break. Only three players managed to find the score sheet for Louisiana Tech in the first half.

The Bruins used a 15-5 run opening the second half to push the lead to 52-22 and put the game away.

Magnum Rolle led the Bulldogs (6-7) with 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting and eight rebounds.

(25) MARQUETTE 84, PRESBYTERIAN 45

MILWAUKEE Wesley Matthews scored 12 of his 21 points in the first half as No. 25 Marquette cruised to an 84-45 rout of Presbyterian.

Lazar Hayward contributed 22 points for the Golden Eagles (11-2), who hardly had to break a sweat in their final non-conference game before they open Big East play at Villanova on Thursday.

Matthews made two 3-pointers and scored eight points in under nine minutes as Marquette raced to a 16-4 advantage. Hayward also drained a shot from the arc.

A pair of free throws by Matthews with under five minutes left in the first half pushed the advantage to 33-15. The Golden Eagles held a 40-18 bulge at intermission.

While the Golden Eagles were efficient offensively, they were even better defensively in holding the Blue Hose to 28 percent (7-of-25) shooting in the opening 20 minutes.

The Golden Eagles led by as many as 41 points in the second half.

AlLonzo Coleman scored 13 points and Josh Johnson 11 for Presbyterian (5-8), which was facing a ranked team for a second time this season. The Blue Hose opened the season with an 80-49 loss at Duke.

(15) PURDUE 59, VALPARAISO 45

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana ETwaun Moore scored 14 points and Robbie Hummel added nine and 11 rebounds as No. 15 Purdue won its sixth straight game with a 59-45 victory over Valparaiso.

The Boilermakers (11-2) did not have their best offensive performance, but limited the Crusaders to just 33 percent (15-of-45) shooting.

Purdue held a 27-25 lead at the break and never trailed during the second half, leading by as many as 16 points.

Jake Diebler and Urule Igbavboa each scored 13 points to lead Valparaiso (3-9), which has lost five straight games.

(23) MINNESOTA 82, HIGH POINT 56

MINNEAPOLIS Ralph Sampson III scored 17 points as No. 23 Minnesota used a hot-shooting night to cruise to an 82-56 victory over High Point.

Lawrence Westbrook added 13 points and Devron Bostick and Devoe Joseph chipped in 11 apiece for the Golden Gophers (12-0), who remained the lone undefeated Big Ten team. Minnesota opens conference play against No. 18 Michigan State on Wednesday.

The Gophers shot 52 percent (32-of-62) from the floor, including 11-of-24 from 3-point range. Minnesota dominated on the glass as well, out-rebounding the Panthers, 36-27.

The Gophers broke the game open in the first half with a 29-7 run over the final 9:10 of the opening frame. Sampson and Westbrook scored 11 points apiece in the first half to help Minnesota cruise into the break with a 49-23 advantage.
