Lewis bags brace as league leaders come alive in second half
Tennis newsAMELIA Lewis scored twice as Oxted scored all their goals in a superb second half display to remain top of the league.
Oxted had been frustrated in the first half but they looked like a different team after the break, when they really came alive.
Oxted suffered an early blow when a free hit was deflected on to the head of Penny Carolyn, who was forced off, leaving Oxted with only one substitute.
Forwards Lewis and Vicky Mackay fought hard for possession and opened up Wimbledons defence several times but the final touch eluded Katie Barker.
Early in the second half, however, Lewis made her signature run up the right wing, beating several players, and unleashing a powerful shot, but a cracking save from the visiting keeper kept the scores level.
As it began to look as though it might not be Oxteds day, player of the match Mercer picked up the ball on the half way line.
With a perfectly weighted ball she found Lewis, who took it onto her reverse and cleanly beat the keeper to give Oxted the lead.
The hosts continued to apply the pressure and the second goal came when Ruth Smyth and Kat Barnard refused to give up the ball in the opposition D. They forced Wimbledons defence into errors and Smyth put the ball away clinically in order to double Oxteds lead.
Determined to keep her goal tally high, Lewis was first to react when she had a shot saved and scored Oxteds third. Barnards hard work was rewarded with a goal, a beautiful shot from the edge of the D.
It was a fine all-round team effort after what had been a frustrating first half.
