Federer nips in

Tennis news

Roger Federer and Juan Martin Del Potro were last night waiting to discover their opponents in the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour Finals today following the late-night drama on Thursday that saw Andy Murray knocked out, writes Dylan Hill.

Federer was two points away from elimination in a second-set tie-break but ended up top of the group, with Del Potro joining him after a 6-2 6-7 6-3 win.

Murray was eliminated on the percentage of games won, with the trio level on matches won and set difference, paying the price for failing to beat Fernando Verdasco in straight sets.

Federer, who had been 6-4 to top the group, faces the secondplaced finisher in Group B today. However, with Novak Djokovic beating Rafael Nadal yesterday to keep his hopes alive, that could have been Djokovic, Robin Soderling or Nikolay Davydenko, depending on the result of Soderling v Davydenko late last night. Any win for Davydenko would have eliminated Djokovic, while the Russian needed a 2-0 win to deny already-qualified Soderling top spot and set up a clash with Del Potro.
