Los Santos gets wildcard entry
Tennis newsJUAN Los Santos could be heading for a big tournament next month if he impresses the Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia in the LTAM- ITF Mens Pro Futures 6, which starts tomorrow at the National Tennis Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
Los Santos, ranked 192nd in the world junior rankings, has been given a main draw wildcard for Futures 6 after a impressive show in Futures 5, which ended yesterday.
The 17-year-old, who played in the qualifying round of this years Australian Junior Open, managed to take a set from Indias World No 482 R. Virali Murugesan before losing 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of Futures 5.
National coach S. Selvarajoo said Los Santos has improved tremendously.
Los Santos has matured as a player and if he continues to progress, he will be the countrys next top star. I hope he will make an impact again in Futures 6, said Selvarajoo yesterday.
Los Santos current form could be bad news for the Sea Games bound players, who did not perform well in Futures 4 and 5.
LTAM can make changes to the squad during the Games team managers meeting in Laos.
Meanwhile, Thailands Kittiphong Wachiramanowong, the World No 604, received a boost ahead of the Sea Games when he captured the Futures 5 singles title yesterday.
The unseeded Kittiphong upset Croatias World No 567 Peter Jelenic, the eight seed, 7-5, 6-3.
In the doubles, Belarus Siarhei Betau-Dzmitry Zhyrmong, the fourth seeds, upset second seeds Rohan Gajjar of India and Irelands Colin OBrien 6-4, 6-3 to lift the title.
The Belarus pair also won Futures 4 last week.
